Data Challenge 2016

FLAMEL sponsored the ASM-GT Materials Data Challenge, held on April 8 – 9, 2016.  This 2-day event focused on the emerging discipline of materials informatics.  The challenge included a juried competition of researchers from ASM International, with participating students from computer science, data science, and materials science.  Student teams were presented with a data challenge problem:  to redesign aircraft components that were originally built in the 1950's and 1960's with no original specs or original manufacturer.  The main challenge was to reverse engineer an AI6061 alloy part and find the heat treatment required.  The student teams gave presentations to show their approach to solving the given problem, which amazed and inspired the judges and mentors.  The Iron Dragons Team, consisting of David Freiberg, Christine Palmer and Axel-Jose Persinger, all of Drexel University, won the grand prize of $500 by successfully using materials science domain knowledge to inform their data analytics.
